A Practical Look at the First Week
The first week on a new troubleshooting contract rarely looks like the proposal. You arrive with a list of suspected failure points, and within two days the list has changed twice. This post walks through what that first week actually involved on a recent assignment at a metal fabrication plant in Shah Alam, where argon handling equipment had been causing intermittent pressure drops across three welding stations.
Day one was mostly about access. The client's maintenance crew had already replaced two regulators and one flow meter, but the problem persisted. Our first task was to verify the gas purity at the cylinder bank before touching anything downstream. A quick check with a portable oxygen analyzer showed the argon supply itself was clean, which narrowed the fault to the distribution lines between the bank and the welding bays.
The second day we isolated each branch line and ran a pressure decay test. One of the three branches held pressure fine; the other two showed slow leaks at the threaded connections near the wall penetrations. The fittings had been installed with PTFE tape that had degraded, likely from exposure to the plant's cleaning solvents. We re-sealed all twelve connections using a thread sealant rated for inert gas service and re-tested overnight.
By day four the pressure readings were stable, but we noticed something else. The pressure regulator at the bank was creeping, meaning the outlet pressure drifted upward over a few hours. It was still within tolerance, but the diaphragm showed signs of fatigue. We flagged it for replacement rather than waiting for a failure mid-shift. The client ordered the part and scheduled the swap for the following weekend.
The last day was documentation. We handed over a simple log sheet for daily pressure checks, marked the re-sealed connections on the plant's piping diagram, and left a list of spare fittings that should be kept on hand. The plant's crew could have done most of this themselves, but having an outside set of eyes made the difference between guessing and knowing.
What stood out from that week was how much time gets spent on access and verification rather than the repair itself. The actual re-sealing took about three hours.
